Update How Long Can Cheap Art Last
I wrote, "Please note that these pressed specimens are not archival quality. They may turn brown with time because I did not dry them in silica gel or press them for a year under encyclopedia books, but they will look just fine until your home sells!"
I certainly hope that anyone selling a home then has happily sold it and moved on.
But how about those pressed ferns? How did they do in their cheap dollar store frames and mats and backing that were anything but archival quality?
The answer is, "Just fine!"
You can see in the photo below that there is some curling, and the color deepened a tad, but they still look presentable.
Ive been known to function a bit towards the slap-dash side of things. My mother was not a fussy, detail person and from her I learned that I could accomplish more if I didnt slow down and wait for the absolute best results. She loved spontaneity. Serendipity was one of her favorite words.
This is a philosophy that has helped me stage homes. Yes, clean your home like its never been cleaned before. Kick all the eyesores and clutter to the curb. But after that, my motto is "Its only staging."
If the television and inflatable bed are fakes thats okay. If the pillows and window treatments are held together by duct tape and hot glue, thats fine. If the plants are silk, and the wine bottles are filled with water, its only staging.
My message to you is that if you are staging a home, especially one where no one is living, theres no need to press for the best.
Clean and organized and pretty. Thats the simple formula for staging success.
You dont need archival anything for that.

I love living on Long Island. We’re in wonderful a wonderful suburb with great school, wooded lots and I happen to live on a quiet dead end. All that, and I’m only 30 miles from midtown Manhattan.
If you’ve heard me talk about my wonderful Island on the MWAPodcast, you’ve heard gripes about how this wonderful Island doesn’t have a good hardwood dealer. Thankfully, that situation has changed. Long Island is now the perfect place to live.
Recently, I was talking with Greg Ferdinand on twitter and he mentioned that he’d hear Riverhead Building Supply was stocking rough sawn lumber at their Calverton location. Last week he and I met there and boy do they.

Greg and I toured the warehouse to find more than 30 species of rough sawn in stock. This seems to be mostly for Riverhead’s own custom millwork and hardwood flooring use, but they sell their stock to the public. We spend about 30 minutes just walking up and down the aisles, simply amazed at what they had in stock. I saw a piece of 8/4 Sapele that must have been 24” wide by 12’ long.
I’m not sure if these seems impressive to most of you. For Long Island, it is fantastic.
Between Riverhead Building’s Calverton rough sawn lumber warehouse and the new Urban Hardwoods in Huntington Station it looks like I’ll have plenty of wood for future builds.

2014 Long Island Woodworkers Club Show

The Long Island Woodworkers ClubShow was this past weekend. This year I had four (4) pieces on display: Stephen’s Step Stool, The Funeral Chair in Blue, the Shaker End Table and Lill’s Quilt rack. The show was at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, as it has been for the past few years. They have a wonderful timber frame barn that make a perfect venue. There were some amazing pieces there. From case work to bowls, the Long Island Woodworkers Club members showed their skills. None of my pieces medaled and that’s just fine. The ones that did deserved to win.

While the show ran all day on Saturday and Sunday, I was only able to attend for about 20 minutes on Saturday afternoon and for about 3 hours on Sunday. During that time I received many comments and compliments on my work. I was pleased by this, but it wasn’t too unexpected.
What was unexpected was which piece received the comments and compliments. Other than one jack ass commenting that Lill’s Quilt Rack was a “great place to hang your towels” all of the comments were aimed at the Funeral Chair in Blue. This surprised me.

Every comment was about how surprised people were by the look of the Timberstrand with many saying they liked the rich tone of the blue dye also. I heard through back channels that the only reason the chair didnt win a ribbon was that it received demerits for being a non-original design. This praise and interest was much appreciated.
What I didnt appreciate was why Lill’s Quilt Rack didnt receive equal praise.

In my opinion, Lill’s Quilt Rack remains the most impressive piece Ive built, both in terms of concept and execution. While it’s not perfect and I didnt expect it to win best in show, I did expect to generate some interest. I certainly expected it to be better received than the Funeral Chair in Blue. Why it didnt, I can’t say I understand.
